Synchronicity

In May of 2010, I was rewarded a year long research grant. My premise for the grant was to explore Nevada in order to gain a better sense of its status quo and culture. On the left side of the above picture is a photograph i took while embarking on this research grant in June, 2010. The picture is from the old mining town, Tonopah, located in central Nevada.
In May of 2011, I graduated, at last, from college. In June, I took off from Reno and traveled across the country via train with two of my best friends. We ended our trip in New York City. It dawned on me a few months after this trip how ironic it was the extremities that I traveled to with in the last year. From one of the least populated, and most desolate states in the U.S. to the most populated urban area in the Nation.
The photograph on the right was taken while I was pell-melling around in Williamsberg, and found a nice lookout viewing Manhattan.
These photographs were taken almost exactly one year apart to the day.
Thought it was pretty cool :)

Madness

I look back to these drawings a lot.. They remind me of a time before I felt the need to communicate through my art. Yet somehow I used to feel more inclined to simply sit and draw as time to myself, and less inclined to connect with other people. I associated this time to meditation. These drawings came out of a place of solitude, and the enjoyment of that. For whatever reason I haven't produced anything quite like these in quite some time...

Building up

This is reoccurring; I like how it looks, and I like to draw it. The Lines establish a sense of form- a form that looks like houses. I think of favelas. the favelas, or stacked houses remind me of poverty. I think of south america and all the colors. I feel nostalgic. Then think of the suburbs, and how much I hated living out there. Then I think about how favelas are so different from the suburbs even though they are seemingly the same concept. The favelas grow up and resemble mountains inhabited by humans, and they both provide protection. They are colorful, charismatic run by drug dealers, and somehow beautiful. Where as suburbs expand on forever as pasty white rows of confusion. My thoughts could go on forever but then I realize I must stop thinking. because my page is already filled up. and those thoughts are simply thoughts.
In the mean time

I like to keep myself busy around Reno...It is certainly the only way to stay sane. I painted these two murals (actually stencils) on the side of Junkee's Clothing Exchange (located on the corner of Sierra St. and Virginia) in May 2010. What an experience! (somewhat true, somewhat sarcastic) I would really like to get better at stenciling and use it more often, espeicially for large scale projects. The problem with these stencils is that they are on brick walls... so a LOT of the detail from the stencils is lost. Which is a bummer. Next time i wont spend hours and hours and hours painstakingly carving out detail for something that goes on a brick wall. That's all. lesson learned. moving on.
Come on now

The Following paintings are from my show titled "Guided Meditation" at the Church of Fine arts; University of Nevada, Reno... From March 2010. With these paintings I explored a style until I felt like I couldn't take it any further without over-kill. Months and months have gone by and I'm finally picking up this energetic painting style again and brinking on the edge of revelation (ha). I see this series as a stepping stone to developing my own style as a painter and also getting to know the paint (I build up from acrylic to oils) Im also beginning to talk about what I want to talk about-- energy. I'll blab more about that when i've got it.
